Norfolk General Hospital Foundation celebrates achievement: New Mammogram machine on the way!

Patients in Norfolk County will soon have access to state-of-the-art mammography technology for breast examinations, thanks to the incredible generosity of our community. This advanced equipment will enhance breast examination services, offering better access to high-quality imaging and diagnostics.

Our new mammogram system features 3D imaging, providing a clearer and more detailed view of breast tissue, allowing for earlier detection and reducing the need for repeat tests. This advanced system enables us to offer a wider range of services locally, minimizing the need for patients to travel. It also simplifies procedures such as biopsies, making them less invasive. Overall, the new system delivers faster results, a more comfortable experience, and enhanced care for our community. This upgrade replaces the equipment we have been using since 2008.

“Norfolk General Hospital has top-tier radiologists specializing in mammography. Combined with this advanced technology, their expertise positions Norfolk General Hospital as a leader in rural health for mammography services.” – Leigh McFadden, Director of Clinical Diagnosis.

The Norfolk General Hospital Foundation fully funded this project, made possible by the generous support of our community. The new mammography system is expected to be up and running by early 2025.

“Having a new mammogram machine means we can capture the highest quality images in less time, giving our radiologists the best tools for accurate diagnoses. Everyone who donated toward this urgent need made this possible—helping us secure new technology that will benefit our friends, families, and neighbors  for many years to come.” — Emma Rogers, CEO of the Norfolk General Hospital Foundation.

For over 40 years, Norfolk General Hospital has been a leader in mammography services, performing, on average, over 3,600 yearly exams. Our program is part of the Ontario Breast Screening Program, providing routine screenings for women aged 50 to 74. On October 8, 2024, services were expanded access to include women starting at age 40, offering earlier detection opportunities.

Booking an appointment is simple. Women can schedule their screenings, even without a family physician. Reminders are sent by mail, and results are shared with both participants and their primary care providers. If follow-up testing is needed, we help coordinate it. To book an appointment through the OBSP, call 519-429-6974
