What to expect during your stay
We know that staying with us is not something most people look forward to…we’re not offended! But still, we want to ensure that your stay is as enjoyable as it can possibly be. Besides the excellent and compassionate care you will receive, there are a number of features and options and resources we offer to make you feel (at least somewhat) at home.
About Staying at NGH
The hospital has a limited number of semi-private and private rooms. The hospital will do its best to admit you to the type of accommodation you request. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. Private rooms are often used for patients who need to be isolated for medical reasons or to provide patients and their family's privacy and dignity when death is expected. Sometimes patients who were admitted before you occupy these rooms.
Telephones:
Telephones are available at each bedside, except for beds in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and the Step-Down unit.
For the comfort of all patients, incoming calls will not be accepted for patients between the hours of 10 pm and 8 am.
Television:
Entertainment and TV rental services are available bedside. Patients or their loved ones can either complete the rental process anytime on the bedside terminal or by visiting www.ConnectMyBed.ca.
WiFi:
Norfolk General Hospital offers free wireless internet access for patients and visitors.
NGH’s Nutrition and Food Services (N&FS) Department’s dedicated and qualified staff work around the clock to provide you or your loved ones with healthy and nutritious meals during your stay. Meals are freshly prepared on-site by our certified cooks and the trays are assembled just before being delivered to your room to ensure proper temperatures. N&FS supervisors manage the day-to-day operations and monitor tray line service to ensure excellent food presentation and tray accuracy.
Registered Dietician
Our inpatient clinical dietician is an integral member of our N&FS team and is a registered dietician in good standing with the College of Dieticians of Ontario.
On a referral basis, the dietician is available to assess your nutritional status and develop a nutritional care plan to ensure your nutritional needs are met. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your nutritional health and require a visit from the dietician, let your healthcare team know.
Menu
To ensure variety in meals, we provide a 21-day menu cycle. The menu is developed in consultation with a Registered Dietitian and based on Canada's Food Guide to ensure optimal nutritional care and meets guidelines for standard, texture modified, therapeutic and gastrointestinal diets.
We make it a priority to ensure all food preferences are accommodated. For your safety, we ask that you notify your healthcare team of any food allergies or intolerances.
Special holiday meals are served during Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Patients and visitors are welcome to visit the sanctuary located on the first floor. Nursing staff have contact information for all the clergy should the need arise and you would like us to contact someone on your behalf. Clergy are available 24 hours per day.
The hospital cannot be responsible for lost items. If you lose something, please notify your nurse right away and we will make every effort to help you find it. Unclaimed articles are turned into the lost and found department located in the laundry department and can be reached at ext. 1292.
