What is a Colposcopy?

A colposcopy is a procedure to closely examine the cervix—the lower part of the womb located at the top of the vagina. Unlike a Pap test, which samples tissue from the entire cervix, a colposcopy allows the healthcare provider to take tissue samples (biopsies) from specific areas that appear abnormal.

This procedure is often done after a Pap test shows abnormal cells. These cells often go away on their own, but in some cases, they could pose a risk of developing into cervical cancer if left untreated. A colposcopy helps confirm if abnormal cells are present and whether treatment is necessary to remove them.

How is this service performed?

Our Colposcopy Clinic is staffed by a dedicated team of gynecologists, nurses, and administrative professionals committed to providing excellent care.

  • The procedure typically takes 15 to 20 minutes and is similar in comfort to a Pap test.
  • No anesthesia or pain medication is needed.
  • You can go home the same day.
  • Treatment to remove abnormal cells is recommended if there is a moderate or high risk of them becoming cancerous if untreated.
