Imagine having nothing in your fridge and relying on the kindness of others for your next meal. Now picture surplus food—perfectly fresh and nutritious food—being rescued from going to waste and turned into meals for those in need in our community. This is the heart of Norfolk General Hospital’s (NGH) partnership with Second Harvest’s Food Rescue program: reducing waste, feeding our community, and building a healthier tomorrow.
Since November 2023, NGH has partnered with Second Harvest to make this vision a reality. To date, the program has provided food valued at $12,505.45, helping local non-profits deliver 3,297 meals to individuals and families in need. By redirecting surplus food, NGH has also helped prevent 18,812 pounds of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.
Addressing Food Insecurity together
At NGH, we know that good health starts with proper nutrition, and we are doing what we can to ensure no food goes to waste while helping our friends and neighbors. Through Second Harvest’s Food Rescue program, surplus items like prepared meals, fresh produce, baby food, meat, and fish are distributed to local organizations, ensuring that nutritious food reaches people who need it most.
“At Norfolk General Hospital, we are committed to supporting the health of our community, and access to healthy food is a big part of that,” said Todd Stepanuik, President and CEO of Norfolk General Hospital. “Partnering with Second Harvest’s Food Rescue program has allowed us to provide meals to those who need them while reducing waste and helping the environment. We’re grateful for the difference this program is making and look forward to continuing this important work.”
Food insecurity is a challenge facing communities across Canada, including ours. Through this partnership, we’re addressing a real need while also reducing waste, showing that small, thoughtful actions can lead to big changes.
A community effort
This program is only possible thanks to the people who work behind the scenes to make it happen. NGH’s Food Service team, led by Supervisor Bonnie Major, plays a key role in identifying and preparing surplus food for donation.
“Every meal we donate represents a chance for someone to feel cared for. It’s more than food—it’s about making sure people know they matter.”
This partnership goes beyond numbers—it’s about people and the difference we can make together. By rescuing surplus food, NGH and Second Harvest are tackling hunger, reducing waste, and building a healthier, stronger community.
It’s proof that when we work together, even small actions can create meaningful change—one meal at a time.
