Recovering from addiction is challenging enough on its own, but for people with substance use disorders, mental health challenges often make the journey even harder. In fact, individuals with substance use disorders are up to three times more likely to experience a mental health issue in their lifetime compared to those without a substance use disorder. When addiction and mental health issues occur together, they are called concurrent disorders, and they require specialized care that treats both at the same time. To help meet this need, Norfolk General Hospital (NGH) and Holmes House are proud to welcome Dr. Tanya Hauck, an Addiction Psychiatrist, to their team. Her arrival marks a monumental step forward in offering comprehensive care for people facing these challenges in Norfolk County.
Dr. Hauck focuses on personalized care, team education, and evidence-based treatments. She works closely with the team at Holmes House, which includes psychiatrists, counselors, addiction physicians, nurse practitioners, and peer support workers. Together, they create individualized treatment plans to help clients address both mental health and addiction issues.
At Holmes House, Dr. Hauck provides expert assessments, treatment recommendations, and guidance on therapeutic strategies. Alongside resident psychiatrists, such as the current elective resident Dr. Ashley Warnock, she co-facilitates groups that help clients learn practical tools to manage emotions, cope with stress, and build stronger relationships. These programs make a meaningful difference, giving clients the skills they need to take control of their lives and move toward recovery.
“I enjoy teaching and capacity building, and I hope to work together to provide concurrent disorders services to more people who need them, in a recovery and strengths-focused way,” said Dr. Hauck. “I aim to collaborate with Holmes House, the Emergency Department, the inpatient units, the wider community, and meet clients and providers wherever they are located.”

Holmes House, located in Simcoe, Ontario, has long been a trusted resource for addiction recovery. Operated by NGH and funded by the Ministry of Health, it offers 24/7 withdrawal management, a 21-day residential program, day treatment options, and the Addictions Supportive Housing (ASH) program, which provides up to a year of housing and life skills support. Holmes House is dedicated to creating a safe, compassionate environment where individuals can recover and achieve long-term stability.
Dr. Hauck’s engagement extends beyond Holmes House to NGH’s Emergency Department, where she provides consultations and training for handling complex cases such as stimulant-induced psychosis, PTSD, and severe withdrawal. Her expertise strengthens the care team’s ability to address these challenges, ensuring patients receive high-quality, compassionate care when they need it most.
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Hauck to our community and healthcare team at Holmes House and NGH,” said Dr. Robin Martin-Godelie, Chief of Staff. “Her expertise and insights will be much appreciated, and we look forward to working with her to provide excellent care for patients and families affected by addictions and mental health concerns.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Hauck plans to expand virtual consultation services at NGH, making specialized care more accessible for patients with urgent needs.
“I grew up on a sideroad, and I strongly believe we all deserve access to subspecialty medical services, no matter what our postal code is. In mental health care, I often see clients excluded from tertiary services due to living out of catchment.”
“I have been working with Holmes House since approximately 2020, and I am excited to work with many wonderful counsellors who understand concurrent disorders and the role of trauma in substance use, as well as exceptional treatment staff who understand the connections between severe mental illnesses and substance use disorders and provide evidence-based, interdisciplinary care.”
Dr. Hauck brings an impressive academic and clinical background to her role. She completed her undergraduate, PhD, medical school, psychiatry residency, addictions fellowship, and clinical epidemiology MSc at the University of Toronto, where she studied for 20 years. She completed her psychiatry training in 2018 and pursued an addictions psychiatry fellowship in 2019. Since 2020, she has been practicing as an addictions-psychiatrist, focusing on helping people navigate the challenges of addiction and mental health.
With Dr. Hauck on board, NGH and Holmes House reaffirm their commitment to accessible, compassionate care. Her expertise and dedication bring hope to patients and their families, transforming lives and building a stronger, healthier community.
