Masking now required at NGH Emergency Department and Outpatient Clinics
(Simcoe, ON) – To protect patients, visitors, and staff amid rising measles cases in our region, Norfolk General Hospital (NGH) now requires masks to be worn in the Emergency Department, patient waiting areas, and outpatient clinics. This precaution is in line with measures being implemented by other hospitals to help reduce the spread of illness.
Throughout the rest of the hospital, NGH remains a mask-friendly environment where masks are encouraged but optional.
What’s changed:
- Masks are now mandatory when visiting the Emergency Department, in waiting areas, and outpatient clinics (e.g., X-rays, CT scans, and other Outpatient clinics).
What remains the same:
- Patients with respiratory symptoms must wear a mask while moving through the hospital, outside their bed-space/inpatient room, and when in the Emergency Department or an outpatient clinic.
- NGH remains a mask-friendly environment in all other areas (e.g., hallways, cafeteria, hospital units that are not in an outbreak), where masks are encouraged but not required.
- The visitor policy has not changed. Visitors who are feeling unwell should stay home to help prevent the spread of illness.
- Masks are available at all hospital entrances and outside inpatient units. Staff, caregivers, and visitors will continue to have access to personal protective equipment when needed.
- Patients scheduled for surgery should follow their physician’s instructions regarding pre-operative testing and precautions.
NGH will continue to monitor measles cases, adjusting safety measures based on the latest evidence and guidance.
Thank you for your kindness, and cooperation. Our staff and physicians are working extremely hard to keep everyone safe and we appreciate your support.
