Influenza A Outbreak declared on 4B Complex Continuing Care Unit

Norfolk General Hospital (NGH) has declared an Influenza A outbreak on the 4B Complex Continuing Care Unit. The outbreak was confirmed on Monday, January 13, 2025, after five patients developed symptoms of respiratory illness.

To keep everyone safe and prevent the spread of the virus, NGH has put several safety measures in place:

  • Patients with symptoms, as well as those they have been in contact with, are being isolated.
  • Everyone working at NGH and approved caregivers must wear masks while on the unit.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting have been increased across the unit.
  • Patients on the unit are being monitored closely for any signs of illness.

At this time, visitors are not allowed on the unit, except for Essential Care Providers (ECPs) who have approval from the patient’s care team.

We understand this is a difficult time for families and friends. To help you stay connected, we encourage you to use phone calls, video chats, or other technology to reach out to your loved ones.

NGH is working hard to control and stop the outbreak as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding and support as we continue to prioritize the health and safety of our patients, staff, and community.
