Respiratory outbreak declared on the 4B Complex Continuing Care Unit at NGH

Date issued: Monday, March 9, 2026

Norfolk General Hospital (NGH) has declared a respiratory outbreak on the 4B Complex Continuing Care Unit after two patients developed respiratory illness.

Respiratory viruses can cause symptoms such as cough, congestion, and shortness of breath.

Our Infection Prevention and Control team has put measures in place to reduce the spread of illness. These measures include:

  • Isolation of symptomatic patients: Patients who are ill or may have been exposed are staying in their rooms to reduce the chance of spread.
  • Enhanced cleaning: Cleaning and disinfection on the unit have been increased, with a focus on high touch surfaces.
  • Contact tracing: Staff are identifying and notifying anyone who may have been exposed.
  • Regular symptom monitoring: Patients on the unit are being checked regularly so they can receive care quickly if symptoms develop.
  • Visitor guidance: Visiting on the 4B unit is limited to Essential Care Providers. Visitors are encouraged to wear a mask when visiting.

We ask visitors and Essential Care Providers to stay home if they feel unwell. Even mild cold symptoms can spread easily in a hospital and may cause more serious illness for patients receiving care.

We understand these temporary restrictions may be difficult for families. We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of visitors as staff work to maintain a safe environment for patients and the care team.

Norfolk General Hospital continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates if conditions change.
