(Simcoe) – The Norfolk General Hospital Volunteer Association has donated $45,000 to purchase wheelchairs, bedside tables, and sleep chairs for patient rooms at Norfolk General Hospital (NGH).

These are some of the items families rely on most when a loved one is in the hospital. A place to rest overnight. A table within reach. A wheelchair is ready when it is needed.

Research shows that when families can remain close and comfortable, patients experience less stress and a better overall care experience.

“Our volunteers understand what matters most to patients and families,” said Kerri Emberlin, Director of Volunteer and Spiritual Care Services. “They raise funds that go directly into patient rooms and resident spaces. Their work supports comfort, dignity, and safe care every day.”

This is the Association’s third major donation this fiscal year, bringing total contributions to $85,000 for patient and resident care. Last year, volunteers donated $78,000 to support similar needs across the hospital and nursing home.

Funds are raised through the Coffee Kiosk, Gift Shop, Craft Group, 50-50 ticket sales, and community events such as Tag Days.

“This is a great example of how our volunteers directly shape the patient and resident experience,” said Todd Stepanuik, President and CEO of NGH and NHNH. “We are very grateful for the time, care, and dedication they bring to our hospital and nursing home every day.”

With one more donation planned before the end of the fiscal year, volunteers have already surpassed last year’s total. Their goal now is to reach $100,000 in support of priority needs for patients, residents, and families.

This ongoing support reflects NGH’s focus on the patient and family experience and how volunteers help us foster healthier communities through exceptional rural health care, close to home.
