What is a Colposcopy?

A colposcopy is a simple procedure that lets doctors take a closer look at the cervix—the lower part of the uterus at the top of the vagina.

It is usually recommended after a Pap test shows abnormal cells. Most abnormal cells clear up on their own, but sometimes they can develop into cervical cancer if left untreated. A colposcopy helps confirm whether treatment is needed.

During the procedure, your doctor may take small samples of tissue (biopsies) from any areas that look unusual.

What to Expect

  • The procedure takes about 15–20 minutes.
  • It feels similar to a Pap test.
  • No anesthesia or pain medicine is needed.
  • You can go home right after.
  • If needed, treatment can be arranged to remove abnormal cells.

Our clinic is staffed by gynecologists, nurses, and support staff who are here to provide safe, respectful care.
