NGH, NHNH and Holmes House celebrate staff excellence in patient care and teamwork

Date issued: Monday, January 12, 2026

(SIMCOE, ON) – They may contribute in different ways, but they each share a deep commitment to patient care, safety, and supporting one another. That was the central theme of the nominees and recipients of the 2025 Dr. George Marshall Award, Norfolk General Hospital’s (NGH) highest honour. The special awards ceremony took place on December 16, 2025.

The Dr. George Marshall Award is presented annually to an individual or team that demonstrates passion for improving quality of care, leads by example, and inspires others. Nominees and recipients are selected entirely by their peers.

Matthew Smye, a proud member of NGH’s maintenance team for over five years, captured the Dr. George Marshall Individual Award, for both his professional and personal commitment to safety and accountability as well as the commitment he brings to his work each day.

“I am not someone who looks for recognition,” said Smye. “Knowing this was nominated by my colleagues makes it very meaningful. Working with everyone here makes it easy for me to be myself and do my job every day.”

“This was not something I expected. There are many others who could just as easily be recognized for this award.”

Beyond the hospital, Smye also serves his community as a volunteer firefighter with Station 10 in St. Williams, a role he has held for nearly seven years. Whether at work or in the community, he is known for his steady presence and commitment to keeping others safe.

Holmes House team recognized for compassionate, responsive care

The Holmes House team was named the 2025 group recipient of the Dr. George Marshall Award. The team was recognized for its compassionate approach to care and its strong focus on teamwork and client support.

“Receiving the Dr. George Marshall Award is meaningful to the Holmes House team because it reflects recognition from colleagues who understand the complexity and demands of addiction care,” stated Stephanie Rochon, Holmes House Manager. “Being nominated by peers affirms the collective effort of a multidisciplinary team that continues to show up consistently for clients, particularly when recovery is not linear and individuals may experience setbacks. This recognition reinforces the importance of perseverance, compassion, and teamwork in recovery-oriented care.”

Holmes House provides withdrawal management and residential programming for individuals aged 16 and older who are living with substance use challenges. The program focuses on helping people feel supported, respected, and connected to recovery resources in the community. Over the past year, the Holmes House team supported nearly 1,000 people through addiction and mental health services.

During this time, Holmes House also expanded services, introduced a new four-week treatment program, and improved how beds are used to better support clients. Client feedback played an important role in shaping these improvements and ensuring care remained responsive and meaningful.

“I would like to congratulate all of the nominees and recipients of the Dr. George Marshall Award,” said Todd Stepanuik, President and CEO at NGH and NHNH. “Being recognized by your peers is meaningful and well deserved. Every day, our staff and physicians work together to provide high quality care and support to patients and families. The teamwork and dedication across our organization continue to make a real difference in the communities we serve.”

The Norfolk Hospital Nursing Home Employee of the Year Award was presented to Amanda Sinden, a personal support worker (PSW) at NHNH. The award is given to someone that cares for the residents and goes above and beyond in their role.

“The Employee of the Year Award is reserved for someone who truly makes a difference in the lives of our residents,” said Susan Pajor, Director of Care. “Working in long term care requires patience, respect, and compassion. Amanda brings these qualities to her work every day, providing thoughtful and attentive care to those who call NHNH home. Congratulations, Amanda.”

Staff, physicians celebrated with long standing Service Awards

Each year, NGH and NHNH recognize employees and physicians for their dedication through Service Awards and retirement celebrations. These milestones honour the contributions of individuals who have supported patients, residents, and families over many years.

This past year, more than 100 staff and physicians were recognized for their service. Nearly 25 recipients marked 20 years or more with the organization, including one individual who celebrated 45 years of service. Together, these milestones represent 1,295 years of care and commitment.

The Hazel Race Career Advancement Fund was also awarded to eleven applicants. Established by the late John Race in memory of his wife, the fund supports staff who are pursuing additional education to advance their careers and strengthen the care they provide.
