(SIMCOE) – In the heart of Norfolk County, a cherished tradition is ready to bid its final farewell. After nearly 50 years, Treasure Mart, a special fundraiser hosted by the Norfolk General Hospital Volunteer Association, is closing its doors for the last time. Since 1976, it’s been a treasured part of our community, creating lasting memories for everyone.

The grand farewell for this iconic event is Saturday, November 18, at the AUD in Simcoe. Join us for its final moments, offering a variety of items to buy, from books, crafts, clothing, unique trinkets & treasures, a silent auction, a penny table, and a delightful café. But beyond the things you’ll find, the true purpose of this event is remarkable. All the money raised at Treasure Mart goes towards buying essential medical equipment for Norfolk General Hospital, leaving a lasting legacy of support for our community’s healthcare.

As we look back on this final chapter, it’s not just about the event itself; it’s a celebration of the incredible dedication, kindness, and unwavering support that have been the backbone of this fundraiser for nearly 50 years. Throughout the years, Treasure Mart has raised over an impressive $376,000, a testament to the strong support from our community hospital.

Why is Treasure Mart ending? It’s not due to lack of interest, but the challenge of finding new volunteers to continue this cherished tradition. The solution? Our Volunteers have started new fundraising initiatives, like a 50/50 fundraiser, to keep supporting our community.

Doug Sibbett, a volunteer since 2009 and the current Chair of Treasure Mart, shares his feelings about this final chapter.

“The people I’ve worked with over the past 14 years is what I’ll miss the most,” said Doug. “Their support, along with the community, has made this journey amazing. Seeing people lined up down the parking lot on sale day was the best feeling. It was awesome.”

We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone, including WJ Moving, Leons, Scotlynn, students at Holy Trinity, and many other helpers who’ve been a part of loading and unloading items for this event over the years. Our incredible volunteers deserve special recognition— it’s their commitment and determination that have made this event successful, and for that, we say thank you!

We would also like to thank our community for their generosity that has empowered us to buy equipment, tools, and technology to ensure we’re always ready to meet your needs close to home, whether it’s in our Emergency Department, surgical care, or even joyous occasions like ultrasounds of new babies.

While many aspects of healthcare are covered by government funding, buying new and replacement hospital equipment isn’t one of them. We rely entirely on donations from people like you—people who understand the importance of a fully equipped hospital.

As we say goodbye to this beloved event, the spirit of giving and support for Norfolk General Hospital will endure, carrying on the values set by the Norfolk General Hospital Volunteer Association.
