Important Note About Obstetrical Services

Dear patients, families and communities we serve,

This pandemic is the most significant healthcare crisis of our time. As a hospital, we have a responsibility to do everything we can to protect our teams and those in our care.

Everyone at Norfolk General Hospital is committed to giving you the best quality healthcare possible. This has been our commitment for nearly the past 100 years, and our physicians, nurses, and staff will never lose sight of the quality of care as we move into the future.

The recent decision to temporarily transition obstetrical care to the Brant Community Health Care System (BCHS) was a difficult choice to make, but it was also the right thing to do.

At Norfolk General, quality patient care is our top priority. The nursing shortage across Canada and Ontario left us no choice but to put patient safety first and temporarily close our Labour and Delivery unit. We have an obligation not to put those we care for at risk.

At Norfolk General our focus is on what we can control today. This will guide us in building a positive and bright future for our hospital and patients for years to come. We are committed to bringing obstetrical care back to our hospital and community. We are actively engaged in working group meetings with a broad range of stakeholders to develop a plan for the safe transition of obstetrical care back to Norfolk General. We are prioritizing recruitment and offering incentives to attract highly skilled nurses to fill the positions we need. We are also introducing an employee incentive program that rewards staff by referring exceptional talent to our organization.

Our commitment to building a brand new Labour and Delivery unit has also not changed. We will continue with the renovation project as part of our reopening plans. The Norfolk General Hospital Foundation will continue to raise funds for the project, and it is our goal to build a state-of-the-art Labour and Delivery unit for you and our community.

If these past 18 months have taught us anything, it’s that when we all work together, we can overcome tremendous challenges, including this one. You have our commitment that we will do everything in our power to bring Labour and Delivery back to NGH.
