Surgical Day Care & Endoscopy

The Surgical Day Care Unit  (SDC) is open weekday from 7am to 4pm, or later if required and is located on the second floor.

Surgical patients are required to provide their health card and any forms their doctor has given them when they arrive the day of their surgery.

SDC staff work closely with patients to ensure they are well prepared for their surgery. Patients return to SDC after their surgery where they are monitored, assessed and prepared for discharge, to return home the same day as their surgery. Patients are provided with discharge instructions and if applicable, a prescription prior to discharge.

Patient’s will require a ride home, their ride may wait or if they prefer to leave, we will provide access to a phone to call when patient’s are ready to go home. Patient’s must have someone accompany them home and stay the night.

The Endoscopy unit performs examinations of the stomach and digestive system, it operates weekdays from 7am to 4pm.

Some important points:

  • Patient’s who are booked for a colonoscopy have been given instructions on how to prepare for the procedure. It is very important to follow the instructions, as the bowel must be clean for the physician to examine; and
  • For patient’s who are booked for a gastroscopy, it is important to follow the fasting instructions, as the stomach must be empty.

The appointment will take approximately three hours. Patient’s will require a ride home, their ride may wait or if they prefer to leave, we’ll provide access to a phone to call when patient’s are ready to go home.
