Physician RecruitmentLike most other communities in Ontario, Simcoe and surrounding area has experienced a shortage in family doctors. In March of 1997, Norfolk General Hospital applied for the underserviced designation with regard to Medical manpower for catchment areas of Simcoe, Township of Delhi, and the City of Nanticoke. At that time, serving a population of 50,000, this area was critically under serviced with only 4.8 physicians per 10 000 population, compared to the provincial average of 6.5 doctors per 10 000 population. Over the past three years, aggressive recruitment initiatives have been undertaken by Norfolk General Hospital with excellent results. Five new physicians have located their medical practice to the area, and are available to take new patients who currently do not have a family doctor. (A list of those physicians taking new patients is accessible by calling the Emergency Department @ 426 - 0130 ext. 1212). These new physicians find Simcoe and the surrounding area appealing for a variety of reasons, including recreational, educational and residential opportunities.
